Description
Alternate world that's undergone a number of rounds of technological enlightenment and major social upheaval (e.g. nuclear war a thousand years in the past). Rather than a post-apocalyptic horror story, it's an alternate reality where the technocrats are largely isolated from the secular world and live a monkish lifestyle.

- One of those books that I thought about periodically for years after initially reading it, so I finally broke down and re-read it. While it's fairly long and can be a little dense (simultaneously on both science and philosophy), I found it fascinating and engaging. The world is interesting enough I wouldn't mind it if he went back and wrote a far flung prequel/sequel in the same universe.
