The Grateful Dead

These guys pretty much invented the genre. I believe they might have had one album go gold, and yet they could easily sell out stadiums. They allowed fans to tape them and share their bootlegs. They had armies of followers that would go from show to show. In short, they were a lot of fun and did it for a lot of years.
