As part of the WPA's social service initiatives in the 1930s, congress had the foresight to track down living former slaves and interview them. This book uses those old tapes and wax recordings to tell about slave life from those that lived it. Upsetting in its honesty and thorough in complilation, this book is heartwrenching.
