Description
This is the first book of what will supposedly be a six part series ("A Song of Ice and Fire"). While it is a fantasy series, this book really only hints at the magic system involved. It's more of an undercurrent. Instead, you gain a better understanding of the politics between the major families involved, and the various characters that are housed within them.

- Excellent writing. Unlike a lot of fantasy that I've read the past couple years (namely, Robert Jordan), Martin doesn't hide what some might call that darker side of human nature. Namely, sex and backstabbing (both literally and politically). It has more of a real feel to it than WOT for that reason. The characters are deeper, and Martin isn't afraid to kill them off. Nor is he afraid to turn the supposed heros into bad people and vice versa. Highly recommended for any fantasy buff, but also for anyone else that likes a good story.
